If you have around 20 minutes to spare, I highly recommend that you watch this documentary. For example, I didn't know that the Pacer originally was supposed to get a .... engine, from one of the big three, but the program was cancelled in the very last minute. So they had to shoehorn in one of their old engine. If you don't already know, you'll have to watch it to know what I am talkling about. The documentary also mentions several reasons for the death of AMC, the unfortunate "Alliance" with Renault being one of them.

About 3000 were sold in France alone. "Celebrity endorsements" included Brigitte Bardot and Coluche.

The French loved it, and I'm not surprised.
Tell somebody it's a French car and not American as apple pie and they'd believe you, unless they knew otherwise. It just seems very French - very Citroen (Renault would not have liked to hear that, though).

I rather like Pacers - they're unusual in a set of ways ranging from simply odd to pleasant, but few bad. I recently read an owner's survey taken of Pacer owners after their first year and those who actually bought it liked it quite a bit. The width of the body would make it an excellent car to revive and re-engine with a modern plant, but they're quite hard to find these days.

it is a very true thing right there. It was a very French American car. more so than an Alliance in my mind
